Which small songbird breeds across northern Eurasia and Alaska before migrating to Africa?
Answer
Northern wheatear
Answer
Northern wheatear
The northern wheatear breeds across northern Eurasia and Alaska before migrating to Africa for winter.
Despite its name, the northern wheatear is a chat in the Old World flycatcher family, not a true wheatear-like relative of North American sparrows. It feeds mainly on insects and other small invertebrates in open tundra, moorland and rocky country.
Its migration is remarkable because some populations travel from Alaska across Asia and Europe to sub-Saharan Africa. The species therefore makes one of the longest journeys known for a small songbird. Birds often pause at stopover sites to refuel, making habitat protection along the route important.
