Which skier won the men’s giant slalom at the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Alberto Tomba won the men’s giant slalom at the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics.

The Italian defended his Olympic giant-slalom title at Albertville after winning the event at Calgary in 1988. Tomba finished ahead of Norway’s Kjetil André Aamodt and Austria’s Günther Mader.

His victory was part of an exceptional Olympic record: Tomba won five alpine skiing medals across three Winter Games, including three golds. He became famous for his aggressive, powerful technique and charismatic public profile.

The giant slalom result is sometimes mixed up with Tomba’s Albertville slalom medal. He won silver in slalom at those Games, while his gold came in giant slalom. The two events both use gates, but giant slalom has wider turns and greater spacing.
