Which skier won the men’s alpine combined gold medal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Kjetil André Aamodt won the men’s alpine combined gold medal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.

Aamodt won the combined by adding his times from the downhill and slalom portions. He finished ahead of fellow Norwegian Lasse Kjus, while American Bode Miller took bronze. The victory made Aamodt the first alpine skier to win four Olympic gold medals, a record he later extended.

The combined event tests both speed and technical ability. Competitors complete a downhill or super-G-style run and a slalom run, with the results combined by time. It differs from the team event and from the modern mixed-format combined competitions introduced later.

Aamodt had already won Olympic gold in super-G at Albertville in 1992 and giant slalom at Lillehammer in 1994. He added another combined gold at Turin in 2006, becoming the only alpine skier to win the same individual event at four consecutive Olympics.
