Which ski jumper set the men’s world record of 253.5 metres in Vikersund in 2017?

The story behind the answer

Stefan Kraft set the men’s ski-flying world record of 253.5 metres in Vikersund in 2017.

Kraft achieved the jump on 18 March 2017 at Vikersundbakken in Norway during the FIS Ski Flying World Championships. The distance surpassed Norway’s Robert Johansson, who had set a 252-metre record at the same venue one day earlier.

Ski flying differs from standard ski jumping because athletes use specially enlarged hills and can travel more than 200 metres. A jump’s official result depends on the measured distance and landing quality, not distance alone.

The record is often confused with the longest jump ever attempted. Some exceptionally long jumps have ended in falls and do not count as official world records. Kraft’s jump was successfully landed and officially ratified.
