Shrek was the first animated movie to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
The film won at the 74th Academy Awards, held on March 24, 2002. This was the first presentation of the Best Animated Feature category, which the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had created to recognize feature-length animated productions.
Shrek competed against Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius and Monsters, Inc. Its victory gave DreamWorks Animation an early landmark award and established the franchise as a major force in theatrical animation.
The award is sometimes confused with earlier Oscars awarded for animated short films or special achievements in animation. Best Animated Feature specifically recognizes a feature-length animated film, and Shrek was the inaugural winner. The film was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Song.
