What is the name of Shrek’s father-in-law in the Shrek film franchise?

The story behind the answer

Shrek’s father-in-law in the Shrek film franchise is King Harold.

King Harold is Fiona’s father and the husband of Queen Lillian. He rules Far Far Away and first plays a major role in Shrek 2, when Shrek and Fiona return from their honeymoon. Harold is initially hostile toward Shrek because he expected Fiona to marry Prince Charming and because he is hiding a secret from his past.

That secret is revealed when the story explains that Harold was once the frog who became human after marrying Lillian. His transformation links the character to the fairy-tale tradition of enchanted princes and also explains why he understands the pressure of maintaining a royal appearance.

Harold is voiced by John Cleese. Although he begins as an obstacle to Shrek and Fiona, he ultimately accepts their marriage and helps protect them from the Fairy Godmother’s plan.
