Which ship was the first vessel of the Olympic-class ocean liners?
Answer
RMS Olympic
Answer
RMS Olympic
RMS Olympic was the first vessel of the Olympic-class ocean liners.
Harland and Wolff built Olympic for the White Star Line in Belfast. Its keel was laid in 1908, it was launched in October 1910, and it entered service in June 1911 after sea trials and fitting out. The class was designed for the North Atlantic passenger trade and also included Titanic and Britannic.
Olympic was the only one of the three sisters to complete a long commercial career. Titanic sank on its maiden voyage in April 1912, while Britannic sank in the Aegean Sea in 1916 after striking a mine during service as a hospital ship.
Olympic served as a troop transport during the First World War and later returned to passenger service. It was retired in 1935 and dismantled. Because Titanic became the best-known sister, quizzes sometimes mistakenly identify it as the class leader; Olympic was launched and entered service first.
