Answer
RMS Carpathia
Answer
RMS Carpathia
RMS Carpathia rescued more than 700 survivors after RMS Titanic sank in 1912.
The Cunard Line passenger ship was sailing from New York to Fiume when Titanic’s distress call reached it on 15 April 1912. Captain Arthur Rostron ordered Carpathia toward the sinking liner at maximum speed, despite ice warnings and the risk of collision in the darkness.
Carpathia arrived several hours after Titanic disappeared beneath the North Atlantic and recovered 705 survivors from the ship’s lifeboats. The rescue made Rostron internationally famous, and he later received awards including the Congressional Gold Medal. Carpathia itself was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-55 in July 1918 during World War I.
Carpathia is sometimes confused with Californian, the nearby ship criticized for not responding effectively. Californian did not rescue Titanic survivors; Carpathia did. The ship’s role is therefore one of the clearest rescue stories in ocean-liner history.
