Which ship collided with the Italian liner Andrea Doria off Nantucket in 1956?

The story behind the answer

MS Stockholm collided with the Italian liner Andrea Doria off Nantucket in 1956. The collision occurred in dense fog on 25 July, while both passenger ships were navigating the North Atlantic.

Andrea Doria was operated by the Italian Line and was traveling toward New York. Stockholm, a Swedish American Line vessel, was heading eastward. The ships struck at an angle, and Stockholm’s reinforced bow penetrated Andrea Doria’s starboard side. Andrea Doria capsized and sank the next morning.

Most people aboard Andrea Doria were rescued, in part because the nearby liner SS Île de France responded to the distress call and provided crucial lifeboat assistance. Fifty-one people died in the collision and its immediate aftermath. Stockholm survived after repairs and later sailed under several names; the wreck of Andrea Doria remains a challenging site for technical divers.
