Big Bird appeared in a “Draw the Neighborhood” art-contest episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.
The Sesame Street character visits the Neighborhood of Make-Believe during the 1981 “Mister Rogers Talks About Competition” sequence. King Friday XIII has announced the contest, and Big Bird arrives to submit his drawing. His visit creates a small story about rivalry, friendship, and Henrietta Pussycat’s worry that her friendship with X the Owl might change.
This appearance is easy to confuse with Fred Rogers’ own Sesame Street guest appearance. Rogers appeared on Sesame Street and spoke with Big Bird, but that is a separate crossover. The quiz asks which Sesame Street character appeared in the Make-Believe art contest, and the specific visitor was Big Bird.
The contest unfolds across several episodes, including one in which King Friday selects the winner. Big Bird’s appearance was also notable as the first appearance by a character from another PBS television show in Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.
