Beginning in 1973, what song closed each episode of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood?

The story behind the answer

Beginning in 1973, “It’s Such a Good Feeling” closed each episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

Fred Rogers sang the song during his familiar farewell routine, when he changed back from his cardigan and sneakers and prepared to leave the television house. Its closing lyrics reassured viewers that they were special simply because they were themselves, making the song a natural emotional conclusion to the program.

The timing has a small wrinkle: “Tomorrow” was the regular closing song during the show’s earliest years, and “The Weekend Song” was used on Fridays for part of the early 1970s. “It’s Such a Good Feeling” began appearing in 1972 and became the standard closing song by 1973, continuing through the series’ final years.

The song should not be confused with “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”, which opened the program. “You Are Special” was another famous Rogers song, but it was not the show’s regular closing theme.
