Which semiconductor company makes networking chips and owns the VMware virtualization business?

The story behind the answer

Broadcom makes networking chips and owns the VMware virtualization business.

Broadcom Inc. is a major semiconductor and infrastructure-software company. Its hardware products support wired and wireless communications, data centers, storage, broadband, and networking. The company also sells enterprise software following a series of acquisitions.

Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware in November 2023. VMware had been founded in 1998 and became known for virtualization software, which allows multiple virtual machines to run on one physical computer. The acquisition expanded Broadcom beyond semiconductors and increased its exposure to corporate technology budgets.

Broadcom should not be confused with Broadcom Corporation, the earlier chip company acquired by Avago Technologies in 2016. Avago adopted the Broadcom name after that transaction. The modern company’s market capitalization reflects both semiconductor operations and software assets.
