Which seabird migrates from Australia to the Bering Sea and back each year?

The story behind the answer

The short-tailed shearwater migrates from Australia to the Bering Sea and back each year.

This seabird breeds mainly in southern Australia, especially Tasmania, during the Southern Hemisphere spring and summer. After breeding, it travels north across the Pacific to rich feeding waters around the Aleutian Islands and the Bering Sea.

The species is also called the muttonbird in Australia, where its chicks have traditionally been harvested. Its migration is a large-scale circuit rather than a simple one-way journey: the birds return south through the central Pacific before the next breeding season.

It is often confused with the sooty shearwater, another long-distance migrant with a similar dark appearance. The short-tailed shearwater is distinguished by its shorter bill and its Australian breeding range.
