Which sea lies between Corsica and the French Riviera?

The story behind the answer

The Ligurian Sea lies between Corsica and the French Riviera.

It is a northern arm of the Mediterranean Sea, bordered by the island of Corsica to the south and the Italian Riviera, including Liguria, to the north. France’s Mediterranean coast also meets the sea near the French–Italian border. Genoa, one of Italy’s major historic ports, sits on its northern shore.

The name probably derives from the ancient Ligures, a people associated with the coastal region before and during Roman times. The Gulf of Genoa forms the sea’s northernmost section, while the sea connects eastward with the Tyrrhenian Sea and westward with the broader Mediterranean.

People often confuse the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian seas because both touch Corsica. The Ligurian Sea is north of Corsica and adjacent to the Italian Riviera; the Tyrrhenian Sea lies mainly east of Corsica and Sardinia, alongside the western Italian mainland. The area is also known for steep coastlines, major ports, and the Ligurian Sea Cetacean Sanctuary, established in 1999.
