What trench contains the deepest point of the Indian Ocean?
Answer
Sunda Trench
Answer
Sunda Trench
The Sunda Trench contains the deepest point of the Indian Ocean.
Also called the Java Trench, it curves through the eastern Indian Ocean from the Lesser Sunda Islands past Java and along Sumatra toward the Andaman Islands. It formed where the Australian-Capricorn plate dives beneath the Sunda portion of the Eurasian plate, a process known as subduction.
The trench reaches roughly 7,290 metres (23,920 feet), making it deeper than the Diamantina Deep, another candidate once considered the Indian Ocean’s deepest location. Surveys by the Five Deeps Expedition helped confirm the trench’s status in 2019.
A common mix-up is the Mariana Trench, which contains Earth’s deepest point but lies in the Pacific Ocean. The Sunda Trench is also associated with major earthquakes, including the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami.
