Which sea lies between Alaska and Russia?

The story behind the answer

The Bering Sea lies between Alaska and Russia.

This marginal sea occupies the northern Pacific Ocean, with Alaska and the Aleutian Islands on its eastern and southern sides and Russia’s Far East and Kamchatka Peninsula on its western side. The Bering Strait connects its northern waters to the Arctic Ocean’s Chukchi Sea.

The sea is named for Vitus Bering, a Danish-born Russian navigator who systematically explored the region in 1728. Its waters cover more than 2 million square kilometres and support productive fisheries, including pollock, salmon and crab.

The Bering Sea is often confused with the Bering Strait. The sea is the broad body of water; the strait is the narrower passage between the Chukchi Peninsula and Alaska. During the last Ice Age, lower sea levels exposed Beringia, a land bridge linking Asia and North America.
