Which sea is located between Italy and the Balkan Peninsula?
Answer
Adriatic Sea
Answer
Adriatic Sea
The sea located between Italy and the Balkan Peninsula is the Adriatic Sea.
The Adriatic is the northernmost arm of the Mediterranean Sea, extending about 800 kilometers from the Po Valley in the north to the Strait of Otranto in the south. Italy forms its western shore, while Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Albania line much of its eastern side.
Its eastern coastline is especially rugged and contains more than 1,300 islands and islets, most of them associated with Croatia. The sea reaches a maximum depth of about 1,233 meters in the South Adriatic Basin and connects with the Ionian Sea through the Strait of Otranto.
A common mix-up is the Ionian Sea, which lies south of the Adriatic, or the Tyrrhenian Sea, which lies west of Italy. The name Adriatic ultimately comes from the ancient settlement of Adria near the northern coast.
