Which sea is a hypersaline lake bordered by Jordan and Israel?
Answer
Dead Sea
Answer
Dead Sea
The hypersaline lake bordered by Jordan and Israel is the Dead Sea.
The Dead Sea is a landlocked salt lake in the Jordan Rift Valley. Jordan lies to its east, while Israel and the West Bank lie to its west. It is an endorheic lake, meaning water flows in but there is no natural outlet; evaporation therefore concentrates dissolved minerals and salts.
Its name refers to the harsh conditions created by extreme salinity. The lake has supported only limited microbial life, rather than the fish and aquatic plants found in ordinary lakes. Its dense water also makes people unusually buoyant, which is why floating in the Dead Sea is a famous tourist experience.
The Dead Sea is not a true sea in the oceanographic sense. “Sea” is a traditional geographic name, as with the Caspian Sea and Aral Sea, both of which are also inland bodies of water. The Dead Sea has been shrinking because river water is diverted and the region is intensely arid.
