Answer
Ionian Sea
Which sea has Calypso Deep as its deepest point? The answer is the Ionian Sea.
Calypso Deep lies in the Hellenic Trench, south-west of Pylos, Greece, within the Ionian Sea. It is the deepest known point in the Mediterranean, reaching roughly 5,109 metres. The trench formed in a highly active tectonic region where the African Plate is being pushed beneath the Aegean portion of the Eurasian Plate.
The name “Calypso” recalls the nymph Calypso from Homer’s Odyssey, although the deep is a modern geographic name rather than an ancient landmark. Its extreme depth makes the Ionian Sea more than a route between Greece and Italy: it is also one of the Mediterranean’s most dramatic submarine landscapes.
A common mix-up is calling Calypso Deep the deepest point of the Ionian Sea alone. More precisely, it is the deepest point of the entire Mediterranean Sea, located within the Ionian. The first crewed descent took place in 1965, and a 2020 expedition refined the depth measurement.
