Which Scottish town is home to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club?

The story behind the answer

The Scottish town home to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club is St Andrews.

The club was founded in 1754 as the Society of St Andrews Golfers, playing on the links at St Andrews. King William IV granted it the “Royal and Ancient” designation in 1834, helping establish the town’s enduring identity as a centre of golf.

The club is often confused with The R&A, the organisation that now governs major parts of the sport and runs The Open Championship. They separated legally in 2004, although both remain closely associated with St Andrews. The club also does not own the famous St Andrews Links courses; those are managed by the public St Andrews Links Trust.

St Andrews is widely called the “Home of Golf.” The town’s Old Course, historic links, and governing institutions made it one of the game’s most important locations long before modern professional golf developed.
