Which school does J.K. Rowling’s character Harry Potter attend?

The story behind the answer

Harry Potter attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Hogwarts is the fictional British magical school at the center of J.K. Rowling’s seven Harry Potter novels. Harry receives his acceptance letter at age eleven and begins his first year after traveling from London to the school by the Hogwarts Express.

Students are placed into four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger are sorted into Gryffindor. Lessons include Potions, Transfiguration, Charms, and Defense Against the Dark Arts.

Other wizarding schools appear in the wider series. Beauxbatons Academy is associated with France, Durmstrang Institute with northern Europe, and Ilvermorny with North America. They are not alternative names for Hogwarts; they are separate fictional institutions in Rowling’s wizarding world.
