Which Hogwarts house is J.K. Rowling’s character Luna Lovegood sorted into?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling’s character Luna Lovegood is sorted into Ravenclaw at Hogwarts.

Luna first appears in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth novel. She is a student in Harry’s year and becomes known for her unusual beliefs, distinctive speech, and independent way of looking at the wizarding world. Her house is Ravenclaw, whose common room is associated with intelligence, learning, and creativity.

Readers sometimes assume Luna belongs in another house because she is exceptionally loyal and courageous. She fights alongside Harry and his friends, including in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries and the Battle of Hogwarts. Those qualities do not change her official house placement.

Evanna Lynch played Luna in the Harry Potter film series. The films portray many of Luna’s defining traits, including her friendship with Neville Longbottom and her support for Harry during the later story.
