Which scenic coastal road in Victoria, Australia is a famous tourist drive? The answer is the Great Ocean Road.
This 240-kilometre route follows Victoria’s south-eastern coast between Torquay and Allansford. It winds past beaches, cliffs, rainforest and the Shipwreck Coast, giving travellers access to landmarks such as the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, London Bridge and the Grotto.
The road was built between 1919 and 1932 by returned World War I servicemen. It was conceived both as a transport link for isolated coastal communities and as a lasting memorial to soldiers killed in the war, making it widely described as the world’s largest war memorial. The completed road was formally opened in November 1932.
The route is commonly confused with the Pacific Coast Highway, a broad name used for coastal highways in the United States, and with Australia’s Great Australian Bight coastal routes. The Great Ocean Road is specifically Victoria’s celebrated B100 tourist road.
