Which saxophonist recorded the 1956 jazz album Saxophone Colossus?

The story behind the answer

Sonny Rollins recorded the 1956 jazz album Saxophone Colossus.

The album was recorded for Prestige Records on June 22, 1956, at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Hackensack, New Jersey. Rollins played tenor saxophone, joined by pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Doug Watkins, and drummer Max Roach. The session became one of the defining small-group recordings of hard bop.

Saxophone Colossus contains five tracks, including “St. Thomas,” “Blue 7,” and “Moritat.” “St. Thomas” is especially famous for its calypso-influenced rhythm, while “Blue 7” is often praised for Rollins’s extended improvisation and thematic development.

The title is sometimes confused with Rollins’s later albums, but Saxophone Colossus is specifically the 1956 Prestige release. It helped establish Rollins as one of the leading tenor saxophonists of the postwar jazz era and remains one of his most frequently cited recordings.
