Which saint was the Bishop of Hippo and author of 'Confessions'?
Answer
Augustine of Hippo
Answer
Augustine of Hippo
Augustine of Hippo was the bishop of Hippo and the author of *Confessions*.
Born in 354 in Thagaste, in Roman North Africa, Augustine became a teacher of rhetoric before converting to Christianity under the influence of Ambrose of Milan. He was ordained a priest in Hippo Regius and became its bishop in 395, serving there until his death in 430.
*Confessions* was written in Latin around 397–400 and consists of 13 books. It combines autobiography, prayer, and theological reflection, describing Augustine’s youth, his years among the Manichaeans, his search for truth, and his conversion. The work is not a complete life story: Augustine wrote it in his early forties and lived for decades afterward.
A common mix-up is confusing Augustine with Ambrose, who baptized him and was bishop of Milan. Jerome and Gregory were also influential Christian writers, but neither was bishop of Hippo or author of this work.
