Which early Christian deacon was martyred by being roasted on a gridiron?

The story behind the answer

Lawrence of Rome was the early Christian deacon traditionally said to have been roasted on a gridiron.

Lawrence served as one of the seven deacons of Rome under Pope Sixtus II and was responsible for Church finances and aid to the poor. During Emperor Valerian’s persecution in 258, Sixtus was executed, and Roman authorities demanded that Lawrence surrender the Church’s wealth. Christian tradition says Lawrence distributed its material resources to the needy, then presented the poor and suffering as the Church’s true treasure.

According to the famous martyrdom account, the authorities punished him by placing him on a hot gridiron. This instrument became his chief artistic attribute: images commonly show Lawrence wearing a deacon’s dalmatic and holding a gridiron. His feast is celebrated on 10 August, and the Basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura in Rome is associated with his burial.

The gridiron story is traditional rather than historically certain. Some historians note that early sources may describe Lawrence simply as having suffered martyrdom, while the roasting account became prominent in later tradition. Nevertheless, Lawrence of Rome is the canonical answer to this quiz clue.
