Which French Carmelite nun is known as 'The Little Flower'?

The story behind the answer

Which French Carmelite nun is known as The Little Flower? Thérèse of Lisieux is the answer.

Born Marie Françoise-Thérèse Martin in Alençon in 1873, Thérèse entered the cloistered Carmelite community at Lisieux in 1888, when she was only 15. She spent the rest of her short religious life there, taking the name Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face.

Her nickname, “the Little Flower,” reflects the flower imagery associated with her writings and her teaching about the “little way.” Rather than seeking spectacular ascetic feats, she emphasized humility, trust, and performing small acts with love. Her spiritual autobiography, Story of a Soul, made this approach widely influential after her death.

Thérèse died of tuberculosis in 1897 at age 24. Pope Pius XI canonized her in 1925, and Pope John Paul II proclaimed her a Doctor of the Church in 1997. She is sometimes confused with Teresa of Ávila, but Teresa was a Spanish Carmelite reformer of the 16th century.
