Saint Maximilian Kolbe was imprisoned at Auschwitz and died there after volunteering to take another prisoner’s place.

Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish Conventual Franciscan friar, priest, and publisher. Born in 1894, he founded the Militia Immaculata and established a major religious publishing center at Niepokalanów. He also served as a missionary in Japan and promoted devotion to the Virgin Mary.

The Nazis arrested Kolbe during the German occupation of Poland. He was deported to Auschwitz in May 1941. After a prisoner escaped, the camp authorities selected ten men for death by starvation as a reprisal. Kolbe volunteered to replace Franciszek Gajowniczek, a married man with children.

Kolbe survived for about two weeks in the starvation bunker and was killed by a lethal injection on August 14, 1941. Pope Paul VI beatified him in 1971, and Pope John Paul II canonized him in 1982 as a martyr of charity. Gajowniczek attended the canonization.
