Which Catholic saint baptized Augustine of Hippo in Milan during Easter 387?

The story behind the answer

Ambrose of Milan baptized Augustine of Hippo in Milan during Easter 387.

Ambrose was bishop of Milan from 374 until his death in 397. Before becoming a bishop, he served as a Roman administrator, but the people of Milan chose him for the episcopate even though he was not yet baptized. He subsequently received baptism, ordination, and episcopal consecration in a remarkably short period.

Augustine came to Milan as a rhetoric teacher and heard Ambrose preach. Ambrose’s interpretation of Scripture and his intellectual influence helped Augustine move toward Christianity. Ambrose baptized Augustine, Augustine’s son Adeodatus, and Augustine’s friend Alypius at the Easter liturgy in 387.

Ambrose is one of the four original Doctors of the Church recognized in the Western tradition. He is also associated with Ambrosian chant, a liturgical tradition still used especially in the Archdiocese of Milan.
