Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross was born Edith Stein and became a Carmelite nun.

Edith Stein was a German Jewish philosopher who converted to Catholicism in 1922 after reading the autobiography of Teresa of Ávila. She entered the Discalced Carmelite order in 1933 and took the religious name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Her philosophical work included studies influenced by phenomenology, and she continued writing after entering religious life.

Because of Nazi persecution, she was transferred from Germany to the Carmelite monastery in Echt in the Netherlands. The SS arrested her and her sister Rosa in 1942. They were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where they were murdered.

Pope John Paul II canonized Stein in 1998 and named her a co-patron saint of Europe in 1999. Her full religious name is often translated as Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. She is distinct from Teresa of Ávila, whose name inspired her religious identity.
