Which saint is the patron of animals and the environment?
Answer
Saint Francis of Assisi
Answer
Saint Francis of Assisi
Saint Francis of Assisi is the patron of animals and the environment. His love of creation is closely associated with stories about preaching to birds and taming the wolf of Gubbio.
Francis lived in Italy from about 1181 or 1182 to 1226 and founded the Order of Friars Minor, commonly called the Franciscans. His Canticle of the Sun praises God through Brother Sun, Sister Moon, wind, water, fire, and Earth, expressing a spiritual vision of nature as creation rather than merely a resource.
The Catholic Church’s formal ecological recognition came in 1979, when Pope John Paul II declared Francis the patron saint of ecology. He is also associated with animal blessings, especially around his feast day on 4 October, which is observed internationally as World Animal Day.
A common mistake is to treat every story about Francis and animals as a directly documented historical event. Several famous accounts come from later devotional literature, including The Little Flowers of Saint Francis. Francis is also patron of Italy, alongside Saint Catherine of Siena, but that is a separate patronage.
