Which saint experienced a conversion on the road to Damascus?

The story behind the answer

Saint Paul experienced the famous conversion on the road to Damascus. Before becoming Paul the Apostle, he was known as Saul and was described as a zealous persecutor of the early followers of Jesus.

According to Acts 9, Saul was traveling from Jerusalem to Damascus to arrest Christians when a brilliant light from heaven appeared. He heard Jesus ask, “Why do you persecute me?” Saul was blinded and led into Damascus, where a disciple named Ananias prayed over him. His sight returned, he was baptized, and he soon began preaching that Jesus was the Messiah.

The event is usually dated by historians to about AD 33–36, though the exact year is uncertain. Acts recounts the experience three times, while Paul’s own letters refer more briefly to a revelation of Jesus. The story is often called Paul’s conversion, the Pauline conversion, or the Damascus Christophany. Popular paintings frequently show Saul falling from a horse, but the biblical accounts do not mention a horse.
