Which rover's landing site is Jezero Crater?
Answer
Perseverance
Answer
Perseverance
The rover whose landing site is Jezero Crater is Perseverance. NASA's Mars 2020 rover touched down inside the crater on February 18, 2021, beginning a mission focused on ancient habitability and the search for signs of past microbial life.
Jezero was selected because it is a preserved paleolake basin. Billions of years ago, rivers flowed into the crater, forming a delta and depositing clays and other minerals associated with long-lasting water. Those deposits give scientists an unusually promising geological record to study.
Perseverance uses cameras, spectrometers, a drill, and other instruments to examine rocks and collect sealed core samples for possible future return to Earth. It also carried Ingenuity, the small helicopter that became the first aircraft to make powered, controlled flights on another planet.
A common mix-up is confusing the crater with the rover's landing-site name. The rover landed at a location later named Octavia E. Butler Landing, which is within Jezero Crater.
