Which NASA Mars rover is commonly nicknamed "Oppy"?

The story behind the answer

Which NASA Mars rover is commonly nicknamed “Oppy”? The answer is Opportunity.

Opportunity was one of NASA’s two Mars Exploration Rovers, alongside its twin, Spirit. It launched on July 7, 2003, and landed in Meridiani Planum on January 25, 2004. NASA originally designed the rover for a mission lasting about 90 Martian sols, but it remained operational for more than 14 years.

“Oppy” began as an affectionate nickname used by mission operators and scientists. Its long survival, energetic exploration and familiar rover shape helped the name spread from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory team to the wider public. Opportunity’s twin is commonly called “Spirit,” so confusing the two is a frequent mistake.

Opportunity last communicated with Earth on June 10, 2018, after a planet-wide dust storm reduced the sunlight reaching its solar panels. NASA formally declared the mission complete in February 2019. Before then, Opportunity had traveled about 45 kilometers across Mars, far exceeding its planned range and lifespan.
