On which plain inside Gale crater did Curiosity land?

The story behind the answer

Curiosity landed on Aeolis Palus, a plain inside Gale crater on Mars. The landing occurred on August 6, 2012, during NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory mission.

Aeolis Palus is the relatively broad floor surrounding the central mountain of Gale crater, officially named Aeolis Mons and commonly called Mount Sharp. NASA selected Gale partly because the crater offered a geological record of ancient environments and a route from the floor toward layered rocks on the mountain.

Curiosity touched down in a region nicknamed Yellowknife, within a landing area later associated with Bradbury Landing. The rover first explored the nearby plains before beginning its long approach toward Mount Sharp, where exposed sedimentary layers preserve evidence of changing Martian conditions.

The alternatives are other Martian plains or regions, but they belong to different locations and missions. Chryse Planitia was the landing site of Viking 1 and Mars Pathfinder, Utopia Planitia was visited by Viking 2, and Meridiani Planum was explored by Opportunity. Aeolis Palus is the specific plain associated with Curiosity’s landing.
