In Chinese mythology, the Zhurong Mars rover is named for a god of what?

The story behind the answer

In Chinese mythology, the Zhurong Mars rover is named for a god of what? Fire. Zhurong is a mythological figure associated especially with fire and the south.

The name was chosen for China’s first Mars rover because Mars has long been linked with fire in Chinese cultural tradition: the planet is commonly called Huoxing, or “fire star.” The rover’s name also symbolized the goal of igniting China’s exploration of interplanetary space. It was selected after a public naming process in which Zhurong ranked first.

Zhurong is not simply a modern fictional invention. Ancient Chinese texts and later traditions describe the figure in different ways, including as a fire deity, a southern figure, or a legendary official connected with fire. That variation can make mythological descriptions seem inconsistent, but “god of fire” is the standard concise identification used for the rover’s namesake. The rover itself formed part of the Tianwen-1 mission, which landed in Mars’s Utopia Planitia in 2021.
