Which Rolex model, introduced in 1953, became famous as the brand’s professional diving watch?
Answer
Rolex Submariner
Answer
Rolex Submariner
The Rolex Submariner is the Rolex model introduced in 1953 that became famous as the brand’s professional diving watch.
Rolex developed the Submariner for underwater use, combining a highly water-resistant Oyster case with a rotating bezel that allowed divers to monitor elapsed time. Early examples were rated to depths of 100 metres, while later generations achieved much greater water resistance.
The Submariner’s black dial, luminous markers and one-way bezel made it practical for diving, and its design later became one of the most recognisable templates in luxury sports watches. The model is available in versions with and without a date display.
It is sometimes confused with the Rolex Sea-Dweller. The Sea-Dweller was developed later for saturation diving and included a helium escape valve, whereas the Submariner was intended as a more general-purpose diving watch. The model’s association with James Bond also helped make it a cultural icon.
