Which Roald Dahl book follows a boy and his father who hunt pheasants?

The story behind the answer

Roald Dahl’s Danny, the Champion of the World follows a boy and his father who hunt pheasants.

Danny lives with his father, William, in a small caravan beside a filling station and repair garage. After Danny learns that his father secretly poaches pheasants from Victor Hazell’s estate, the two work together on an elaborate plan involving sleeping pills and raisins.

Dahl published the novel in 1975. Unlike many of his books, it presents a close, loving relationship between a child and a parent at its center. The story also explores class differences, land ownership, independence, and the bond between Danny and his widowed father.

The title’s champion is Danny, whose success in the plan earns him admiration. Fantastic Mr Fox also involves pheasant stealing, but its main characters are animals rather than a boy and his father.
