Which Roald Dahl book features the character James Henry Trotter?
Answer
James and the Giant Peach
Answer
James and the Giant Peach
Roald Dahl’s book featuring James Henry Trotter is James and the Giant Peach.
Published in 1961, the novel follows James, an orphan who lives unhappily with his two cruel aunts, Spiker and Sponge. After a magical encounter involving enchanted crocodile tongues, a giant peach grows in the garden. James enters the peach, where he meets a group of giant talking insects and begins an extraordinary journey.
The story was Dahl’s first major success as a children’s author and helped establish the imaginative, slightly dark style associated with his later books. The insects include a Centipede, an Earthworm, a Ladybug, a Spider and a Grasshopper.
James and the Giant Peach is sometimes confused with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because both books feature an isolated child entering a fantastical world. However, James’s adventure takes place inside a flying peach, while Charlie’s centres on Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. The book was later adapted into a 1996 stop-motion and live-action film directed by Henry Selick.
