Kmart is the retail chain famous for its “Blue Light Special” promotions.
The promotion used a flashing blue light mounted on a portable pole to signal a short, attention-grabbing discount somewhere in the store. Employees announced the deal over the public-address system, often with the familiar phrase “Attention Kmart shoppers.” The offer was designed to create urgency and encourage customers to visit a particular aisle.
Kmart’s roots reach back to S.S. Kresge, whose first Kmart-branded store opened in Garden City, Michigan, in 1962. The chain grew rapidly and became one of the largest American discount retailers, selling clothing, household goods, toys, appliances, and groceries.
The Blue Light Special is sometimes confused with an ordinary clearance sale, but its defining feature was the sudden, temporary announcement and recognizable blue beacon. Kmart later became much smaller after bankruptcy, competition from Walmart and Target, and the decline of traditional department-store retail, making the promotion especially associated with the chain’s heyday.
