Which luxury department store has a flagship at 611 Fifth Avenue in New York City?

The story behind the answer

Saks Fifth Avenue has its flagship at 611 Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, New York City.

The original ten-story building opened on September 15, 1924, after Saks & Company moved north from its earlier Herald Square location. Horace Saks planned the relocation with his cousin Bernard Gimbel, creating a Fifth Avenue store designed for the city’s emerging luxury-shopping district.

Architects Starrett & van Vleck gave the building a classical appearance with Indiana limestone, brick, and cast stone. Its position is especially recognizable: it stands between 49th and 50th Streets, across from Rockefeller Center and near St. Patrick’s Cathedral. A later tower at 623 Fifth Avenue expanded the flagship’s footprint.

A common mix-up is confusing Saks Fifth Avenue with Bergdorf Goodman, another famous luxury retailer in Midtown. Bergdorf Goodman’s flagship is at 754 Fifth Avenue, while Bloomingdale’s main store is on Lexington Avenue. The Saks building became a New York City landmark in 1984.
