The first directly operated MUJI store opened in Tokyo’s Aoyama district in 1983.
MUJI began in Japan in 1980 as a private-label brand created for Seiyu supermarkets. Its original concept emphasized practical goods, restrained design, modest packaging, and low prices rather than conspicuous branding. The first products included household items and food, and the brand initially operated through Seiyu rather than as a fully independent retail chain.
The Aoyama store marked an important step because it was MUJI’s first directly managed shop. Aoyama, known for design, fashion, and architecture, was a fitting location for a brand presenting everyday necessities as carefully considered lifestyle products. The shop is often described as MUJI’s first store, but the wording matters: the 1983 opening was the first directly operated location, not the beginning of the product line itself.
A common mix-up is confusing Aoyama with later MUJI landmarks, such as the brand’s first overseas store on London’s Carnaby Street. Those international openings came much later, after MUJI had established its Japanese retail identity.
