Which religious leader did Leo Tolstoy correspond with about Christian nonviolence?

The story behind the answer

Leo Tolstoy corresponded with Mahatma Gandhi about Christian nonviolence.

Their correspondence took place in 1909 and 1910, near the end of Tolstoy’s life. Gandhi had read Tolstoy’s writings on nonviolence, especially The Kingdom of God Is Within You, and contacted him while developing his own ideas about resistance to injustice.

Tolstoy responded with letters and with “A Letter to a Hindu,” an essay arguing that love and nonviolence could challenge systems based on force. Gandhi later acknowledged Tolstoy as an important influence on his ethical and political thinking.

The exchange was intellectual rather than a long personal friendship: the two men never met. Gandhi is sometimes grouped with Martin Luther King Jr. in discussions of nonviolent leadership, but King was not Tolstoy’s correspondent. The relevant correspondence was between Tolstoy and Gandhi.
