Which region is the setting of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are set in the Paldea region.

Paldea is the open-world setting introduced in the Nintendo Switch games Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. The region includes cities, rural landscapes, mountains, lakes, and the Great Crater of Paldea at its center. The games’ storylines send players across the region rather than along one fixed route.

Paldea is broadly based on the Iberian Peninsula, with visual and cultural influences associated especially with Spain and Portugal. This inspiration distinguishes it from earlier regions such as Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Galar, which draw on different real-world locations.

Scarlet and Violet introduced the Terastal phenomenon, which lets Pokémon take on a Tera Type during battle. The games also feature three separate story paths, making Paldea both a geographic setting and the framework for the generation’s main adventure.
