Who composed the music for the original Pokémon Red and Blue games?
Answer
Junichi Masuda
Answer
Junichi Masuda
Junichi Masuda composed the music for the original Pokémon Red and Blue games. He was a key Game Freak developer whose work helped define the sound of the first-generation Pokémon adventure.
Masuda joined Game Freak after being contacted by Satoshi Tajiri during development of the company’s earlier puzzle game Quinty. He became the composer for Pokémon and later took on broader roles as a director and producer within the series.
The original Game Boy hardware had strict technical limits, so the soundtrack used compact electronic tones rather than full orchestral recordings. Despite those limitations, melodies such as the title theme, battle music, and towns’ musical identities became recognizable parts of Pokémon’s style.
Masuda is sometimes confused with Ken Sugimori, who handled major visual and illustration work, or Satoshi Tajiri, who created the franchise concept. Their contributions were different, while Masuda’s original role was composer.
