'Love Island' follows contestants living together in a villa and forming or changing romantic couples.
The modern British series premiered in 2015. Contestants, known as Islanders, enter relationships through recoupling ceremonies, dates and conversations. New arrivals can disrupt existing pairs, while public votes and contestant decisions may determine who remains in the competition. The programme is filmed in a villa in Mallorca, Spain, although the exact property has changed.
The format combines dating with an elimination game. Couples may receive public support, but being in a couple does not always guarantee safety. A recurring twist called Casa Amor introduces a second villa and tests whether contestants remain loyal or choose new partners.
The show is distinct from 'Celebrity Love Island', an earlier 2005 programme with a related title. It also differs from 'Bachelor in Paradise', where former contestants from 'The Bachelor' franchise meet in a resort setting. 'Love Island' became an international franchise with editions including 'Love Island USA' and 'Love Island Australia'.
