Contestants are divided into tribes and must manage shelter, food, and social relationships while competing in physical and mental challenges. At Tribal Council, a tribe votes privately to eliminate one of its members. The format combines outdoor endurance with strategic voting and alliance-building.
Although many seasons use islands or coastal locations, 'Survivor' has also filmed in other environments. Since season 33, the US version has primarily used Fiji as its filming location. The program is hosted by Jeff Probst, who also serves as an executive producer.
The American series premiered in 2000 and was adapted from the Swedish program 'Expedition Robinson'. Its structure has influenced many competition shows, especially those combining survival conditions with eliminations.
