The reality cooking competition that uses mystery baskets of ingredients is Chopped.
In the standard format, four chefs compete through appetizer, entrée, and dessert rounds. At the start of each round, they open a basket containing unexpected ingredients and must incorporate every required item into a dish. They also rely on a pantry and kitchen equipment, but the basket ingredients create the central test of creativity, technique, and time management.
The judges evaluate the completed plates on taste, presentation, and proper use of the basket items. After each course, one chef is eliminated, or “chopped,” until a final competitor remains. The winner traditionally receives a cash prize.
Chopped premiered on Food Network in 2009 and was created by Michael Krupat, Dave Noll, and Linda Lea. Top Chef and MasterChef are also cooking competitions, but their formats use different challenges; Hell's Kitchen centers more heavily on restaurant-service performance and team dynamics.
