The Amazing Race is the reality competition in which pairs race around the world while following clue envelopes.
The American series premiered on CBS in 2001. Teams usually consist of two people with an existing relationship, such as friends, relatives, married couples or colleagues. They travel between locations, complete tasks and follow clues that direct them to the next part of the route.
The main tasks are often divided into a Detour, where teams choose between two options, and a Roadblock, which may require one specific team member to participate. Teams also visit a Pit Stop at the end of each leg, where they may be eliminated or receive a rest period and prize.
The programme was created by Elise Doganieri and Bertram van Munster. Phil Keoghan has hosted the US edition since its beginning. The race has visited countries across every inhabited continent and is known for combining travel, navigation, cultural tasks and relationship pressure.
The clue envelopes are a signature object, but teams may also receive route information through signs, locals and production-controlled instructions.
