In season 1 of the US reality dating show The Bachelor, Alex Michel chose Amanda Marsh in the 2002 finale.
Michel, a restaurant executive, was the first lead bachelor in the American version of the franchise. He met 25 women during the season and reached the final stage with Amanda Marsh and Trista Rehn. In the finale, Michel selected Marsh and gave her a promise ring rather than a traditional engagement ring.
Michel and Marsh continued their relationship after filming but later separated. Rehn became the first Bachelorette and later married Ryan Sutter, making her one of the franchise's most important early figures.
The Bachelor premiered on ABC in 2002 and introduced the rose ceremony as a recurring elimination device. Contestants who receive roses continue in the competition, while those without one leave the show.
